Researching the effectiveness of simulation as a tool for training Anaesthetists

Start project

The Oxford StART (St1 Anaesthetic Recruit Training) Trial is a randomised controlled trial examining the effectiveness of simulation training for new starting anaesthetic trainees. The trial is a collaboration between Paul Greig, Nick Crabtree and Helen Higham in the OxSTaR centre, and Dr Jo Kerr in the Severn Anaesthetic Deanery.

Started in 2012, the trial is funded by a generous grant awarded by the Society for Education in Anaesthesia (UK) and is expected to continue recruitment until 2014-5. The trial is examining both technical- and non-technical skill outcomes, and a planned sub-study will consider if simulation training affects skills retention over time.
