The Readiness for the Initial Assessment of Competency Training (RIACT) Course is aimed at anaesthetic trainees (completing their IAC training) and non-anaesthetic trainees (on anaesthetic placements). It is designed to run alongside regular anaesthetic shifts in theatres. By the end of the course, a trainee should be able to:

  • Assess straightforward patients
  • Deliver simple anaesthetics independently
  • Use common anaesthetic drugs and equipment
  • Establish secure airways & manage airway emergencies
  • Recognise deterioration early & know when to escalate
  • Work safely within theatre teams

The course exists to reduce risk and standardise early training. Rather than cramming everything into one intensive week, trainees repeatedly return to clinical work and build competence progressively.  A range of teaching methods are usually involved, including:

  • Introductory lectures
  • Simulation training
  • Small group tutorials
  • Skills workshops

This course is offered across the Thames Valley deanery and is run through SimBucks and OxSTaR simulation centres. For more details including course dates, locations, and funding, please see www.oxdat.com/teaching/riact-course
