The systems engineering initiative for patient safety (SEIPS) is a framework to help us to analyse work processes and outcomes within the complex adaptive environment of healthcare.

SEIPS is one of the preferred human factors frameworks in the NHS and has been incorporated into the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF)

SEIPS offers a number of tools to support safety incident investigations, and this interactive, introductory course will focus on using SEIPS to:

>support learning and improvement following a safety incident in the immediate aftermath of an incident or for a more-in-depth patient safety incident investigation

>improve engagement and support for patients and their families after a safety incident

>improve support for staff involved in safety incidents

>understand system factors influencing the evolution of a safety incident

>inform system design

>design action plans
