We are delighted to win the NDCN Teaching Award at this year’s Thomas Willis Day. Recognised for making an exceptional contribution to promoting the work of the Department in a teaching setting in 2018.

The Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN), a large research group within the University of Oxford’s teaching hospitals (OUH), celebrates staff achievements at this annual event awarding group prizes for excellence, public engagement and teaching, as well as prizes for individuals presenting their work.

The award reflects our expanding portfolio of undergraduate training across the wider Medical Sciences Division and, recently, with the University's Experimental Psychology team.

In addition, OxSTaR has led a successful collaboration with Oxford Brookes University to provide inter-professional training for medical, nursing and pharmacy students. This resulted in a nomination by students and staff at Oxford Brookes University for a Nursing Times Partnership of the Year award.

As part of our continued effort to provide innovative teaching, we have recently purchased a novel virtual reality (VR) platform for medical students. We are the first medical school in the country to use this technology allowing students to learn in their own time. The scenarios use VR headsets to immerse the students into a virtual emergency department where they can practice to diagnose, investigate and implement treatment for virtual patients. The conditions vary from sepsis and respiratory disease to complications of diabetes. The feedback so far has been outstanding.

We also offer post graduate training to healthcare professionals from all backgrounds; life support training for FMRIB’s scientists; lumbar puncture training for Professor Nemeth’s research group; and human factors training for the University's medical students and staff in both our department and the wider university.
