On 15 April the BBC came to OxSTaR (the Oxford Simulation, Teaching and Research Centre) to film the pilot who for the past 15 years has trained health professionals how to reduce medical error.

Pilot Peter Stevenson is accomplished giving ‘human factors’ training sessions to medical staff. Techniques gleaned from the aviation industry include repeating back instructions, using checklists, and speaking up even if you are a junior member of the team.

The film crew set up a reconstruction of a ‘simulation’ training session. The OxSTaR centre provides a state-of-the-art simulated hospital environment, with special high-tech patient manikins where medical students and healthcare professionals can rehearse a wide variety of medical scenarios.

The programme will be broadcast on BBC Breakfast News on Tuesday 21 April.
