Three projects, STEP UP, SAFE and MAGIC, are finalists in the Patient Safety Awards 2021.

OxSTaR is delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted for three categories at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare. Following one of the toughest years in the health and social care sector, OxSTaR continues to champion patient safety amidst challenges that the health and social care sector is facing.

OxSTaR has been shortlisted despite the tough competition from hundreds of applicants. The three projects have been selected based on their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that the projects have had on patient and staff experiences within the health and/or social care sector.

The categories are:

  • Two finalists in Patient Safety Education and Training Award (STEP UP: The simulation and technology enhanced learning project to upskill during the pandemic; SAFE-in-Maternity: Safety-2 & Appreciative Inquiry For Excellence in Maternity)
  • Two finalists in Patient Safety Pilot Project of the Year (SAFE-in-Maternity: Safety-2 & Appreciative Inquiry For Excellence in MaternityMAGIC – The Management of Acute emergencies in GP surgeries using In-situ simulation and Checklists)
  • Primary Care Initiative of the Year (MAGIC – The Management of Acute emergencies in GP surgeries using In-situ simulation and Checklists)

The judging panel is made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community including Sue Smith OBE (Executive Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, University Hospitals Morecambe Bay FT), Rachel Power (Chief Executive, The Patients Association), Dr Hester Wain (Head of Patient Safety Policy, NHS England and NHS Improvement).

STEP UP: THE SIMULATION AND TECHNOLOGY ENHANCED LEARNING PROJECT TO UPSKILL DURING THE PANDEMIC

STEP-UP was a multi-professional project designed to rapidly assess need and train staff in essential new skills at a time of extreme pressure during the pandemic. Simulation and other educational technologies allowed rapid upskilling of staff and dissemination of knowledge which could be accessed at any time using any device. A wide range of teaching materials, including training in the safe use of personal protective equipment and intubation drills for patients with COVID, were made freely available worldwide via our website. As a result, over 30,000 healthcare professionals from 165 countries have been able to benefit from the project during the pandemic.

SAFE-in-Maternity: Safety-2 & Appreciative Inquiry For Excellence in Maternity

SAFE-in-Maternity is a project run in the Maternity Department of OUH. With the support of OxSTaR, HEE-TV and Belinda Dewar we ran workshops, in-practice work and webinars with a team of midwives, obstetricians, nurses, anaesthetists and maternity support workers over the course of 3 months. The project focuses on the use of Appreciative Inquiry, asking how and why systems/processes/teams work well, to improve patient and staff safety.

MAGIC (THE MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE EMERGENCIES IN GP SURGERIES USING IN-SITU SIMULATION AND CHECKLISTS)

Emergency presentations in General Practice, such as chest pain and bronchiolitis, are increasing. However, GP teams may go weeks or months without having to manage one.  Cognitive aids, such as checklists, exist for emergency management in hospitals and there is good evidence to support improvements in care when they are used properly. However, most checklists are written for hospital practice and applicability to primary care is limited.

The MAGIC project (Management of Acute emergencies in GP surgeries using In-situ simulation and Checklists)  designed novel checklists to support safer practice in the management of emergency presentations in primary care and incorporated them into in-situ simulation training in GP practices.
